Resort Description

In the countryside near Merida, this 18th-century plantation is a distinctive alternative to the chain hotels, and is sure to please with its traditional architecture and gourmet cuisine.

This upscale hacienda hotel located in the countryside outside Merida is a distinctive alternative to the chain hotels of the town. The level of luxury is high, the food exquisite, and the personal service unsurpassed. This colonial-era plantation, which takes its name from the Mayan for "tall stone house," sits amid acres of lush gardens and royal palms, and flowering bougainvillea adorns the walls and balconies.

Extra touches, like turndown service and fresh fruit, add to the charm and appeal of the accommodations. All guest rooms have spacious baths with whirlpool tubs, and deluxe studios have large verandahs strung with hammocks. If only the best will do, choose one of the 5 suites, which have living rooms, whirlpools, and waterfalls on private verandahs that face the gardens.

Gourmands especially delight in the hotel's restaurant, which has won acclaim for its fusion of Mayan, Caribbean, and French cuisines. The restaurant, comprised of 2 private dining rooms, is housed in a building once used for threshing rope fibers. You can choose to dine under skylight canopies or on the torch-lit verandah. Alternatively, room service delivers throughout the day.

The hotel's plantation history is also evident in the swimming pool, which has been cleverly reconstructed from the original reservoir. For total relaxation, the hotel spa offers a Mayan honey and flower massage in addition to a menu of steam baths, body wraps, facials, and more. The hotel can also arrange golf, tennis and horseback riding.

Insider Tip: Be sure to take time to explore the ponds and fountains dotted across the property. There's even an 18th-century chapel that still hosts weddings.

Visit this intimate hacienda property for an interesting alternative to a traditional hotel stay.
